Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such drugs must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
